Due to special functions and working conditions that different screen types are limited to, Screen varieties can be categorized in three ways- 1. according to the optical properties;2. according to acoustic characteristics ; 3. According to the way how a special kind of screen is set up

1. According to the optical feature of screen surface, projection screen can be divided into following categories: Directional diffuse reflection screen; Honeycomb screen; Transmission screen

2. According to the acoustic characteristics, projection screen can be divided into following categories: perforated screen; holeless screen

3. According to the way how screen is set up : fixed screen; The portable screen

Diffuse reflection screen: It is widely used in the film screening and slide projector. A cloth curtain, rubber curtain, plastic curtain, and screen with barium sulfate coating or matte p我aint coating or zinc oxide coating. Diffuse reflection screen features in that the surface will equally scatter the reflected light in all directions, then when users watch the images on screen at any angle in front of it ,the brightness will not change with the change of direction and angle. The diffuse reflection screen is suitable for a big place and suitable for black and white images.

Directional diffuse reflection screen: its optical properties is that it can reallocate the reflected light on surface and scatter the light in certain concentrated direction. But one thing need to be pointed out is that the diffusion Angle for this kind of screen is small. This kind of screen can be divided into two tppes- metallic and glass-beaded screen. Metallic screen is coated with white metallic powder such as aluminium powder on the surface which can reflect various colored lights. And glass-beaded screen is the fiber surface coated with a layer of white lac on which another layer of transparent glass bead is equally scattered.

The honeycomb screen: the screen is using mould pressing or rolling method to make many tiny smooth-faced convex reflector/lens or concave reflector/lens which are put in certain order. Some of the reflectors are made of small plates and some are tiny concave relector made of small steel ball

Transmission screen, mainly used in rooms without shielding equipment where audience can watch film screening, projection, slide show at the back of the screen.The brightness of the image depends entirely on the amount of light penetrating from the back of the screen. Therefore, the screen has high transmission coefficient.And because the audience watch the screen at the back, thus they will not be disturbed. Moreover, in this way it can reduce the human eye's visual fatigue.Then because the room is bright, the audience can taking notes while wathcing. Therefore, the transmission screen was officially used in school's audio-visual multimedia teaching.

The perforated screen: Many small holes are evenly punched on the screen surface. When using ordinary screen, the loudspeakers are on both sides next to the screen, but in order to make the sound synchronize with the images, it is better for loudspeakers being put in the middle. But given the dense texture of ordinary screen surface, it is not easy for sound to penetrate and thus affect the sound quality. In order to make up for this shortcoming, the cinema or club prefer a perforated screen.
